Specialty Wellness Classes
Spring 2008

  1. Specialty Wellness Classes are NOT included in Recreation, FitSpace, or Group Exercise memberships. They are separate fee-based classes. In order to participate in a Specialty Wellness Class, participants must register in advance. No registrations will be taken at the time of the class, or at the class location.
  2. Students, faculty, staff and Recreation Members MUST have a current BU photo ID card to enter the East Gym facility. All other Specialty Wellness Class participants will be issued an ID card for entrance purposes. Those without their ID card will NOT be allowed into the East Gym, despite being registered for a class.
  3.  Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Most classes have a minimum and maximum occupancy. Classes that are popular fill up quickly. Please register early. Also, some classes have a registration date cut off. No one will be allowed to register after the cut off date.
  4.  No Day Guest Passes or Week Passes are available for these classes.
  5. Parking Permits are required to park anywhere on campus, including the East Gym Lot E. Passes are available for purchase at Parking Services (Couper - G8) or at the Information Booth on Bartle Drive.
  6.  Individuals must register in person at the Membership Services Office #139, East Gym. Please call 7-3072 or 7-3125 for more information.

 

Yoga - For Stress Release & Relaxation
with Michelle Osovski, RYT

February 12 - April 8 (no class March 25)
Tuesday evenings 5:30 - 7:00 pm
   East Gym - Aerobics Room #6
Make some time to nurture yourself with the practice of yoga. Release everyday stress and tension with gentle yoga stretches, breath work, and relaxation techniques. This class is designed for beginners or those with some yoga experience, appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. Leave class feeling grounded, relaxed and stress free!

$45 for an 8 week session

 

Aqua Aerobics                      
with Robin Chodkowski

February 12 - May 8 (no class March 25 or March 27)
Tuesday and Thursday evenings 5:10 pm - 6:00 pm
     East Gym Pool
Water exercise is an ideal workout for everyone! The water not only acts as a resistant force but also provides support for a low impact workout. Each class includes a warm-up and stretch followed by aerobic conditioning, muscle strengthening and a cool down. Different equipment is used to keep classes fun and interesting. No swimming experience required.


$45 per semester.     SOLD OUT!

 

Water Babies! Parent & Child Aquatics
February 9 - March 15
Saturdays       11:00 am - 12:00 pm
     East Gym Pool
Fun and exercise for you and baby! Water Babies is designed to help younger children (6 months - 3 years) with little or no water experience become comfortable in and around the water. This class does not teach children to swim or to survive in the water on their own. The goal is to provide parents with skills to orient their little ones to the water and to supervise water activities safely. Parents must get in water and participate each session. Swim time will last approximately 30 minutes. * All children must wear tight fitting rubber pants or specifically designed swim diaper. More details available with registration.

Water Skippers - Preschool Swim
February 9 - March 15
Saturdays 10-11am in the East Gym Pool

Water Skippers is geared for children ages 3-5 years old. (Must be 3 yrs. by March 15 2008). This is a bridge style class between the Water Babies class and Level 1 children's lessons. Students will become acclimated to the water while learning all kinds of fun games and rhymes. Parents' participation in the pool is not required.

Children's Swim Lessons
East Gym Pool
March 3 - May 7 (no classes March 24, 26, April 21, 23)
Swim lessons will follow Red Cross guidelines for Levels I-V. Children will receive safe and fun instruction from WSI certified instructors. Lessons are for children ages 5 years and up (children must be 5 years old by May 7, 2008). An open swim session for all participants will be held Sunday, March 2nd at 3 pm in the East Gym pool to evaluate current ability level and determine class placement. This session is not required, but highly recommended!

Level I- Introduction to Water Skills - Students will become more acclimated to the water. Students will be assisted with most skills.
Level II - Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Students will learn to swim on their own. students will get an introduction to underwater exploration.
Level III - Stroke Development - Student will learn various stroke techniques. Students will learn proper breathing nd have an intro to more challenging skills.
Level IV/V - Stroke Improvement/Refinement - Students will build on skills learned in Level III and will learn to shallow dive as well as learn various methods of changing direction at the wall.

Mondays & Wednesdays
  Level I & III- 5:30-6:15pm
  Level II & IV/V- 6:30-7:15

$35 for 8-week session - includes Red Cross card

Fitness Swimming
February 9 - March 15
Saturdays  12:00 -1:00pm in the East Gym Pool

Ready to take your fitness routine to the water? Are you training for a triathlon? This class is designed to help you refine your stroke skills, build endurance, learn time saving turns, show you how to use a pace clock for a better workout and assist you in creating an appropriate water fitness program. Swimming experience ins required. Participants should be familiar with all swim strokes. Pre & post class endurance assessments will be offered.

Chair Massages by Aria on the Avenue
What are you doing for your next lunch break? A licensed Massage Therapist will be available for 10 or 15 minute chair massage appointments. Massages are performed in a private, comfortable setting, in a seated position and fully clothed. What could feel better than a midday break with soothing music and gentle massage of your neck, shoulders, back and arms? Book a single appointment, or book regular visits-and bring a friend!

Lifeguard Re certification
This class is specifically designed to re-certify individuals who currently hold life guarding certification. Requirements of First Aid, CPR/AED, and swimming skills will be tested over a two day period.

Saturday, April 12   9am-4pm          First Aid & Life guarding skills
Sunday, April 13      9am-1pm          CPR/AED for Prof. Rescuer Re-Cert
(Participants must hold a a current CPR/AED for Pro. Rescuer card)

Red Cross CPR/AED Professional Rescuer Certification
Participants will learn skills for administering CPR to adults, children and infants, as well as the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Please wear comfortable clothes. To earn certification, you must demonstrate skills and pass a multiple-choice exam. Certification is valid for 1 year.

Red Cross CPR/AED Professional Rescuer - Re-Certification
This course serves as a refresher for those currently certified in CPR/AED Pro. Rescuer by the Red Cross. All skills and techniques will be reviewed and practiced. Please wear comfortable clothes, you will be required to demonstrate skills and pass a multiple-choice exam. *Participants MUST bring their current CPR/AED card to class in order to take the exam. Please bring your own breathing mask.

Red Cross First Aid Certification
This class will provide necessary training for responding to injuries including cuts, sprains, fractures, burns and broken bones. Successful completion of the course will result in Red Cross certification, valid for 3 years.

Red Cross Adult CPR/AED Certification
This class will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing emergencies, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Certification is valid for 1 year.

Specialty Wellness Refund Policy
** Members wishing to obtain a refund must do so in person at the Membership Services Office during business hours. Wellness Services will issue a full refund for any Specialty Wellness class that is canceled by the department due to low enrollment. Application for refunds will be accepted for documented medical conditions. Refunds may be prorated based on participant class attendance. Otherwise, no refunds will be issued.
